Our Adventure in Argentina…

We are once again enjoying our beloved Argentina. When we arrived in a new country in the past, we often followed a set itinerary. However, we plan to adopt a “Slowmad” approach this time.

We are living in San Telmo, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Buenos Aires. It is a charming area with beautiful architecture. Its cobblestone streets, excellent food, and tango make us feel like we are dancing back in time.

In Argentina, locals enjoy Asado, the traditional barbecue. It is cooked on a parrilla, a metal structure with a grill grate over an open fire. The parrilla is designed to cook meat slowly, allowing smoky flavors to permeate the meat.

You no longer have to rely on luck to be invited to an Asado by a local; @the.authentic.ba solved that problem. We went on an Asado culinary adventure, complete with a host, wine pairings, and a grill master, at an exquisite local home—a fantastic house party! All the meat was grilled to perfection; my mouth waters just thinking about it.

Our Adventure in Argentina…

We are once again enjoying our beloved Argentina. When we arrived in a new country in the past, we often followed a set itinerary. However, we plan to adopt a “Slowmad” approach this time.

We are back in Argentina, embarking on a new journey through South America. Sometimes, I wish I had studied harder in that Spanish class; it certainly would be helpful now. But looking back over these wonderful years, I wouldn’t change a thing.

It has been wonderful to be back in the U.S. for the last month after bouncing in and out for a few years. Recently, we witnessed a stunning sunset over a lake in North Carolina. Nothing compares to these beautiful moments in nature...

Have you ever wondered why sunsets display so many colors? There are several reasons for this, but one key factor is the sun’s angle as it appears to descend.

Another essential reason is Rayleigh Scattering, which occurs when sunlight is redirected in various directions due to particles in the air as it passes through the Earth’s atmosphere. During sunset, the sun’s light travels through more of the atmosphere, scattering blue and violet wavelengths out of view and emphasizing red, orange, and yellow wavelengths.

Sunrises and sunsets are universal experiences. No matter where we are, they are a reminder of our shared connection—we collectively experience nature’s beauty, power, and rhythm together.

The city of seven hills…

Lisboa is so beautiful. It is known as the city of seven hills because of its picturesque landscape…and hills! We walked everywhere, up and down, enjoying the scenery and catching our breaths. And then we got smart—we started to zip around on electric scooters. No longer were we limited by our feet—we had wheels and could go anywhere!

One of the places we ventured was to the world's oldest “operating” bookstore, Livraria Bertrand. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, it was founded in 1732. Of course, we had to buy a book and receive the authentication stamp on a book from one of Portugal’s famous authors, Jose Saramago, who received a Nobel prize in literature. I won’t lie; it was hard to buy a book since I have gone digital, but when in Lisboa…

You can’t go to Portugal and not listen to Fado. Soulful and melodic music steals your breath as you listen to the Portuguese guitar with 12 steel strings. The anguish on the singer's face ignites your passion with songs that had to be about love or loss—we were enchanted.

When you tell people you are going to a city, they offer suggestions everywhere. One was to drink Ginjinha, a Portuguese liquor made from cherries. Additionally, we ordered Bacalhau, a fish that has been salted and dried over long periods. This was by far the most salted fish I have ever tasted. Luckily, the wine is cheap in Portugal! One of the best things we ate was Pasteis de Nata, a custard tart - so yummy!!!

This is the second time we have made it to Portugal; both times were excellent. We even caught up with a friend we met in Taiwan!

This is the last post from our trip to Europe, but I failed to write about it, so I had to make up for it. We have returned to the US, planning our next trip and preparing to leave again.

Our last days in Spain…

We made it to our two final destinations in Spain: Alicante and Valencia.

Alicante is a charming port town that features the stunning Santa Barbara Castle, which is free to visit and offers breathtaking views. We were treated to an incredible sunset that made the entire sky look like it was on fire. In addition to exploring the castle, we indulged in delicious food while strolling through this beautiful town. However, it was quite crowded with tourists, including visitors from a nearby cruise ship.

Valencia was once a walled city, but today it only has two gates remaining. It is also said to hold the Holy Grail - the chalice that Jesus used during the Last Supper. Since the 15th century, Valencia has been celebrating the Fallas Festival every march. This vibrant and colorful festival features ‘ninots’, which are large puppet figures. At the end of the festival, all but one of the puppets are burned as part of a cleansing ritual. We visited the Fallas Museum to see which ninots survived the burnings over the years. Additionally, we tasted Spain’s “Horchata” made from tiger nuts that are rich in nutrients and fiber. I’m a big fan of nutritional drinks, and I must admit that it tasted very good.

Finally, we learned about the holiday that falls on October 12th, which is also my birthday. In the USA, we refer to it as Christopher Columbus Day, though I believe there is a petition to rename it to Stephen’s Day. You might want to reach out to your local Congress about that! In Spain, this holiday is known as National Day of Spain, commemorating Columbus’s “discovery” of the Americas!

For the past couple of years, we have been traveling a lot. Sometimes, I wonder why we enjoy it so much. Beyond the obvious reasons of seeing and experiencing new places, food, people, cultures, and customs, I believe it ultimately makes us more understanding and compassionate. Traveling increases our tolerance for others and opens our minds…allowing us to explore new ideas from different view points. With that said, it is time to go back to NY to vote in a very important election!

Best tasting underground water…

Madrid, the current capital of Spain (previously Toledo), obtained its name from its abundance of underground water. Out of all of the places in Spain, the water here tasted the best!

The history of Spain is long, with Madrid playing an important role. Part of that history includes the Moors, a Muslim community of North African descent who had a significant impact on Spanish culture, including language, literature, and architecture. They are also credited with algebra and the concept of zero.

The Royal Palace of Madrid is one of the largest in the world, boasting 3,418 rooms (I wish we could @airbnb it here). Surrounding the palace is a vast forest that is five times the size of Central Park. Additionally, we learned about the construction of churches, with the oldest parts being the most beautiful as they were initially built using donations.

One of the highlights of our time in Madrid was attending a spontaneous Flamenco show. The spirited singers, talented guitarists, and mesmerizing dancers made the experience unforgettable. Watching them perform and seeing the emotions on their faces, we were able to witness true passion for their art.

During our travels in Spain, we have observed the presence of diverse Spanish dialects. Here are the four official languages: Castilian (official national language), Catalan, Galician, and Basque. They are all so different!

Having acquired our (limited) Spanish language skills in Peru, we are accustomed to the nuances of Castilian Spanish. However, intriguingly…Latin American Spanish has also been shaped by the influence of Indigenous languages, adding a distinctive dimension. This world is fascinating…

We find ourselves in San Sebastian, also known as Donostia, a place where the Basque language is spoken. This coastal town is renowned for its surfing, stunning architecture, delectable cuisine (i.e. incredible cheesecake), and a rich history including wars with its neighboring country, France.

One of the fun things we like to do every time we arrive in a new place is to ask ourselves, “Could we live here?” Our time in Finisterre, Santander and now San Sebastian has shown us immense beauty and tranquility, but it has also made us realize that we yearn for bigger cities. Next stop Madrid…

The magical menu…

Santander is a coastal town in Northern Spain - it’s a charming town with good food, beaches and a beautiful coastal walk.

Since arriving in Spain, we have encountered aspects of the culture that initially confused us, but we are beginning to understand them better. It’s common to reassess things when you’re in a new place and seeing things from a different point of view. At first, we found it challenging to adapt to the long lunch breaks, afternoon siestas, and late dinner reservations starting at 8 pm...

Lately, we’ve had a revelation and stumbled upon the magic of the “menu del dia” (menu of the day). This fantastic deal includes a hearty first plate, a satisfying second plate, a choice of wine/beer or water, a delightful dessert, and a cup of coffee, all for an all-inclusive price of just €12 to €20 per person. It’s an incredible value for a complete and delicious meal every time. For our evening meals, we typically opt for a light salad or some yogurt.

On the other hand, we had a simple goal here in Santander…to eat Sardines - Spain knows how to season and grill them to perfection. Every bite was delicious!

With the amazing food in Spain, I’m thankful for all the walking we did at the beginning of the trip. Fortunately, these towns are so beautiful that it’s easy to keep exploring Spain...and keep walking off our food!

Soothing our savage souls…

We headed to the vibrant north of Spain to the beautiful city of Bilbao. Our quest was to find a bustling urban center that could soothe our savage souls, and satisfy our cravings for delicious cuisine and rich culture, all while avoiding the crowds of tourists. We dusted off our hiking clothes and instantly they transformed into our travel clothes…

The first place we visited was the @museoguggenheim Guggenheim Museum. Fun fact: there are four Guggenheim museums, and we’ve been fortunate enough to visit two of them - one in NY and now in Bilbao, Spain. Hopefully, we’ll get the chance to visit the other two in Venice and Abu Dhabi someday. The museum showcased some beautiful and interesting pieces by Yoshitomo Nara @michinara3 @pablopalazuelofundacion and @richard.serra amongst many others.

Next, we made our way to the Basque National Orchestra and celebrated Spanish music with our Spanish brethren. As we eagerly awaited the orchestra to begin, we witnessed the disjointed sounds of tuning and practicing of their instruments evolve into the most incredible symphony - hard work and discipline achieved perfect timing resulting in artistry. It was truly awe-inspiring!

Finally, we tried pintxos, which we initially thought were tapas, small Spanish dishes. In truth, they are similar, but they are specific to this region and delightful. A pintxo is like a tapas, but it’s served on top of a piece of bread…with a small beer or wine. They are so yummy!

Bilbao has been our favorite city in Spain so far! The vibrant atmosphere, delicious food, and culture make us want to live here. But there are still so many more places for us to explore in this beautiful country!

Our quest was to find a bustling urban center that could soothe our savage souls, and satisfy our cravings for delicious cuisine and rich culture, all while avoiding the crowds of tourists. We dusted off our hiking clothes and instantly they transformed into our travel clothes…

The first place we visited was the @museoguggenheim Guggenheim Museum. Fun fact: there are four Guggenheim museums, and we’ve been fortunate enough to visit two of them - one in NY and now in Bilbao, Spain. Hopefully, we’ll get the chance to visit the other two in Venice and Abu Dhabi someday. The museum showcased some beautiful and interesting pieces by Yoshitomo Nara @michinara3 @pablopalazuelofundacion and @richard.serra amongst many others.

Next, we made our way to the Basque National Orchestra and celebrated Spanish music with our Spanish brethren. As we eagerly awaited the orchestra to begin, we witnessed the disjointed sounds of tuning and practicing of their instruments evolve into the most incredible symphony - hard work and discipline achieved perfect timing resulting in artistry. It was truly awe-inspiring!

Finally, we tried pintxos, which we initially thought were tapas, small Spanish dishes. In truth, they are similar, but they are specific to this region and delightful. A pintxo is like a tapas, but it’s served on top of a piece of bread…with a small beer or wine. They are so yummy!

Bilbao has been our favorite city in Spain so far! The vibrant atmosphere, delicious food, and culture make us want to live here. But there are still so many more places for us to explore in this beautiful country!

The end of the world…

After trekking many miles on the Camino, we finally arrived by bus to the picturesque coastal town of Finisterre, Spain. I’ll admit, the ride was full of so many twists and turns that by the end, we were feeling pretty queasy…needless to say, it was worth it.

During the Roman era, Finisterre was considered to be the end of the world… as “finis” means end and “terre” means earth…it is also the technical end of the Camino as can be seen by the 0 kilometers in the picture (we decided not to walk here). I wonder what would have happened if the Romans had come to ‘merica?

Finisterre is for food lovers with numerous restaurants and a bustling fish market offering an array of seafood I’ve never tasted before. We stumbled upon a charming Michelin star restaurant called @terra_restaurante_fisterra.

After a few days rest and relaxation, we’re off to embark on the rest of our Spanish adventure...

The end of the world…

Completing the Camino…

We walked 170 miles from Porto, Portugal to Santiago de Compostela, Spain via the variant spiritual trail over 15 days taking 2 zero days (no miles) with the last day being our longest day of 17 miles. Having this time to be fully present is a great opportunity to quiet your mind - it’s a form of meditation…my favorite.

The question we contemplated was how we preferred to embark on the trail: as sightseers or seekers of meaning? Despite not being religious, I take great interest in exploring the deep philosophical underpinnings of faith to comprehend how individuals shape their perspectives on life. Even though the journey may differ for each of us, the paths we tread ultimately lead us to a greater understanding of ourselves and others.

I also found myself pondering what it would have been like to walk alongside Jesus, as the revered prophet and philosopher...

Completing the Camino…

We walked 170 miles from Porto, Portugal to Santiago de Compostela, Spain via the variant spiritual trail over 15 days taking 2 zero days (no miles) with the last day being our longest day of 17 miles. Having this time to be fully present is a great opportunity to quiet your mind - it’s a form of meditation…my favorite.

The variant spiritual path…

At Pontevedra Spain, we were gifted with two options: the traditional/main Camino path or the Variant Spiritual path (aka Arousa Sea route). We chose the latter…

“The Spiritual Variant starts in Pontevedra and takes pilgrims through coastal villages, forests, vineyards, and beaches. The route then takes pilgrims inland to Armenteira, and then back to the coast at Vilanova de Arousa. The final stage of the Spiritual Variant involves a boat trip to Pontecesures, where pilgrims rejoin the main Camino route”.

The weather has been amazing so far. We haven’t needed our rain gear yet, but it’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Although our umbrella has been a great luxury item, providing solace when it is needed from the hot sun.

We made it to Spain…

Spain is a breathtaking country that has always been on our travel bucket list. Just like Portugal, Spain is known for its stunning landscapes and delicious seafood. Our time here, walking the Camino, has been absolutely amazing, but we’ve encountered a little challenge that keeps adding some excitement to our adventure.

In Spain, there’s this amazing tradition called Siesta, where from 4-8 pm, every restaurant closes. It’s like a magical time when the whole country takes a break. The only problem is that every time we finish our (15-mile) hike and are desperate for rest and food, we arrive right in the middle of Siesta. Unfortunately, these proud Spanish people stick to their traditions no matter what..even when faced with our sad, hungry and desperate faces.

We’ve been trekking along Roman Road XIX, a marvel built in the first century. The historical significance of these roads adds an extra layer of authenticity to our journey, making the experience even more thrilling!

Walking the path…

The scallop shell holds special significance along the Camino de Santiago, serving as a ubiquitous symbol on the journey. It appears on backpacks, marks the way (along with yellow arrows), and fills the shops. Although there are various explanations for the shells, my favorite is that they symbolize the diverse paths to the destination.

The adventure through Portugal is truly spectacular! For the first two days, we’re following the breathtaking coastal route before embarking on the central path. Over the past few days, we’ve covered 59 miles. Our legs are feeling it, but the stunning views, delicious food, and daily stretches are making the journey incredible!

As we venture on the Camino, we’re not just walking a trail. We’re celebrating Liza’s 50 years of life on this Earth. What better way to mark this milestone than by exploring a path as ancient as she is…Happy Birthday Liza! 🎉 😇

Our flight departed at 10:50 pm and landed at 10:30 am in Portugal, which was 4:30 am for us. We were so eager to get started that we decided to walk the first 7 miles. Looking back, perhaps it would have been better if we hadn’t made any of those decisions…

Porto is the birthplace of Port. On our last trip to Portugal in 2015, we indulged in a delightful array of ports and savored every sip. On this trip to Porto, it was a kiss-and-go.

Upon arriving in Porto, the first step of your Camino journey is to obtain a tourist passport. At each location you visit along the way, you’ll receive stamps in this passport. When you reach the Cathedral at the end of your journey, you’ll be awarded a certificate. Personally, I could skip the passport and stamps, but Liza finds joy in these traditions.

The first two days of our upcoming walk will be along the coast, offering a stunning view of the beach and the Atlantic Ocean. We dipped our hand toes (fingers) in the water and felt the chilly temperature. I can’t wait to indulge in delicious seafood afterward!

A pilgrimage in Europe…

We’re excited about our upcoming trip to Europe, starting in Portugal! Our first adventure will be walking the Camiño de Santiago, also known as the Way of St. James, a pilgrimage from Portugal to Spain (there are other starting points).

This pilgrimage leads to the shrine of the apostle James in the beautiful cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, where the apostle was laid to rest. James the Great was one of the very first 12 apostles of Jesus Christ (and also his cousin).

We can’t wait to experience the history and beauty of this sacred journey that started in the early Middle Ages. We’re switching things up a bit. Instead of following the white rectangles (blazes) of the Appalachian Trail, we’ll be searching for seashells. And rather than sleeping in a tent, we’ll be drifting off in a comfy hotel after savoring a delicious cooked meal paired with Spanish or Portuguese wine.

The Camino is supposed to be a wonderful experience where we get to walk through charming medieval villages and stunning landscapes from Portugal to Spain - hopefully learning more about ourselves and others along the way…

The long way here…

Sometimes the best place to visit is the one underneath your nose…to rediscover the hidden gems in your own backyard. For us, that means seeing the new floating island in Manhattan and delving into the vibrant energy of Coney Island, right here in Brooklyn.

We made our way (back) to Coney Island to soak up the sun, feel the sand between our toes, and stroll along the lively boardwalk. Our post-college roots in the Bronx, near Van Cortlandt Park, flashed through our minds as we relished being back in the heart of Coney Island. It instantly reminded us of the electrifying 70’s hit movie “The Warriors”.

The plot follows the Warriors, a gang from Coney Island, who are falsely accused of shooting a rival gang leader. To survive, they must navigate through treacherous NYC streets and make it back home from Van Cortlandt, Bronx to Coney Island, Brooklyn. This film has always been a favorite of mine, and I believe it still holds the same electrifying power today! If you have seen this movie and love it too, give us a shout…”Can you dig it…”

Similarly, it’s nice to be here, waking in the same bed for a longer amount of time and cooking in a full kitchen. It is so satisfying…to make it all the way back to Brooklyn.

Where are all the fireflies..?

We ventured to the south to reach the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. The mountains derive their name from the enchanting blue haze that acts as a mystical filter, giving them an otherworldly appearance.

We hiked the mighty Grandfather Mountain, where Forest Gump once ran. The mountain takes its name from the glorious face carved into it by nature. And we dared to traverse the thrilling mile-high swing bridge…which isn’t scary unless it’s high winds.

We had a good time hanging out with my brother & family on a farm, and the evening was delightful. However, we couldn’t believe that there were no fireflies (aka lightning bugs) around. It’s such a shame that their numbers are decreasing because of habitat loss, pesticides, and light pollution. I have such fond memories of catching fireflies as a kid, and it’s a pity that they were nowhere to be seen...

A view from Brooklyn…

We just finished an incredible journey around the world, and it was mind-blowing! From the bustling streets of NYC to the stunning landscapes of California, the efficiency of Taiwan, the enchantment of Thailand, the beauty of Japan, the first class service of Vietnam, the modern miracle of Singapore, the richness of Germany, the royalty of Scotland, and the beautiful nature of Ireland…this odyssey was beyond thrilling. Experiencing how all things live in different parts of the world was simply amazing!

If you have the chance to travel, it’s absolutely crucial to explore the world. Walking on historic sites that were significant centuries ago and trying to envision life at that time is an incredible experience. I also find joy in witnessing the similarities and celebrating the differences between cultures. It also reinforced my belief that there are countless paths to achieving the same goal, and each one is equally valid.

Even though we’ve been away on a grand trip around our giant blue ball, it feels so good to be here - to be back in Brooklyn. Waking up early to catch the sunrise over the majestic Atlantic Ocean was breathtaking…and, for some reason, it made me feel hopeful about the world to come and grateful for the life I have.

In loving memory of our dear friend Martha. Your presence was a beautiful reminder of the preciousness of life. You will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we will miss you dearly. We love you! Rest in peace.

We just finished an incredible journey around the world, and it was mind-blowing! From the bustling streets of NYC to the stunning landscapes of California, the efficiency of Taiwan, the enchantment of Thailand, the beauty of Japan, the first class service of Vietnam, the modern miracle of Singapore, the richness of Germany, the royalty of Scotland, and the beautiful nature of Ireland…this odyssey was beyond thrilling. Experiencing how all things live in different parts of the world was simply amazing!

The beauty of Ireland…

When you’re in Ireland, it’s easy to see why everything is so green. The combination of rain and sunshine works its magic, creating a stunning landscape that’s truly enchanting. I was so captivated by the beauty that I even went looking for a lucky four-leaf clover, hoping to experience some of that Irish magic, but came up empty-handed.

Serendipitously, our friends introduced us to the most incredible sport called Hurling! Can you imagine the thrill of seeing this adrenaline-pumping game at the Olympics in Ireland? Hurling combines the best of lacrosse, rugby, baseball, and even Quidditch - it’s a mesmerizing spectacle! We watched it on TV and it was dubbed one of the greatest games!

We also tried a float tank, where we floated in a pod filled with salt and Epsom salt at body temperature. It was an incredible experience - the complete darkness and silence made it feel like our brains were floating in water. It was liberating, and honestly, I enjoyed it. I’d definitely recommend trying it out!

Thanks to our friends for their kindness and for allowing us to spend quiet time at their home. It’s time to get back to NYC…

The Royal Mile…

We made a spontaneous detour to Scotland! One of the best things about Europe - hopping to other countries is easy!

Turns out - I have things in common with the royal monarchy…we both strolled down the Royal Mile. However, that’s where the similarities end especially since my royal promenade went unnoticed by everyone.

The Edinburgh Castle, built in 1103 on an extinct volcano that erupted hundreds of millions of years ago, holds an incredible history of capture and independence. The events that have taken place within these walls, including the theft and return of the Royal jewels, are truly mind-blowing.

While in Scotland, we drank scotch, spit on a heart like the locals and had dinner with a dear friend/hiker whom we bonded with when we did the AT (Appalachian Trail). Moreover, the “closes,” or small alleyways, add an air of mystery and intrigue to this historic site.

Scotland has more to offer than this 1 mile, but we are out of time. We need to get back to watch Hurling with my Irish brethren.

We made our way to the Republic of Ireland. Immediately, my brain switched over and my native tongue came out - turns out, (according to 23&me), 25% of my body (and my accent) is from Northwestern Europe which means 1 out of every 4 words is Irish…and that spoken word sounds awful. My accent is no bueno!

We cherished the moments spent cooking, eating, and relaxing with friends. A significant part of our journey involves spending quality time with family and friends, as well as making new friends for future visits.

Speaking of friends: I wonder if Ireland and Northern Ireland will ever reunify. I understand that this thought might be oversimplified and lacking in knowledge...

Das ist mir Wurst (This is sausage to me)…

We had an amazing time exploring Germany! Our first destination was Rüdesheim am Rhein, a charming town famous for its delicious Riesling wines. We were able to see the striking Niederwald monument, a massive statue commemorating the unification of Germany after the Franco-Prussian War. And the Ehrenfels Castle, dating all the way back to 1212, provided a fascinating glimpse into history as it guarded against threats from France.

The second place we visited was Cologne (Köln). As soon as you step out of the transportation hub, you’re greeted by the breathtaking Cologne Cathedral, a towering Gothic masterpiece that leaves you in awe. This magnificent Catholic cathedral is one of the tallest in the world and is adorned with intricate ornamentation. Construction began in 1248 - today, it still stands as a testament to human ingenuity and architectural brilliance.

Germany is an absolutely stunning country! Finally, we were able to explore it after reading so much about its history. As you can imagine, the experience was completely different from our time in Southeast Asia: food, culture…everything! We will need to visit here again. Next stop: Ireland.

Before the worm…

We embarked on a twelve-hour journey, soaring through the skies from the vibrant city of Singapore to the charming country of Germany. When we reached Frankfurt and settled into our beds, it was 2 am Singapore time, but only 9 pm in Germany. Since the sun sets at 9:30 pm, it was still quite bright outside, almost like it was 11 am. Going to bed early meant waking up early too! Today, we woke up before the worm...!

Our first adventure took us to the vibrant city of Frankfurt where we indulged in the local cuisine. We sampled a traditional dish called green sauce, consisting of potatoes smothered in a mysterious, delectable green sauce. We also savored a hearty sausage nestled in a perfectly round bun. It’s baffling that despite their advanced technology, they stick to the classic round bun!

Incredibly, the majestic church in the vicinity was spared from bombing during wartime because it served as a pivotal landmark for the Allied troops. Also, we came across plaques (called stumbling stones) on the ground serving as memorials to the victims of WWII who were deported to Auschwitz. The stone reads “here lived”…

Saying goodbye to SEA (Southeast Asia)…

We’ve been on the most incredible adventure since January and it’s been absolutely thrilling. However, it’s finally time to bid farewell…our journey in Southeast Asia is coming to an end.

Singapore is our last SEA country…it’s a wonderful country filled with great food, nice people and a plethora of man-made developed amenities. If you can deal with the HCOL (high cost of living), humidity, and rain, I can see how many would perceive this as paradise. We also found another @YayoiKusama_ Pumpkin AND I got a new tattoo…

Our journey isn’t complete just yet. Next stop: Europe. We’re kicking off the European leg of our adventure in Germany. Germany is uncharted territory for us, and we’re expecting a contrast from our experiences in Asia...

Nearly twenty years ago…

The first time we planned a trip to Phuket, Thailand was for our honeymoon. Liza and I were married in January 2005, but we had planned our honeymoon six months earlier. Sadly, on December 26, 2004, a devastating tsunami struck, killing hundreds of thousands and becoming one of the deadliest natural disasters in history. My mind is too small to understand the pain AND resilience that they have endured.

Five years later, we were finally able to complete our trip. Looking at the before pictures and then experiencing the recovery felt like witnessing a modern miracle. We saw this rebuilt place and felt the sunshine of their smiling faces.

Now, 14 years later, staying at the same place again, we found it to be even more developed. Furthermore, modern technology has vastly improved the communication and sensory systems for natural disasters…which was so greatly needed.

Thinking back to when we were supposed to come here and then coming here over these 19 years seems like a long time has passed, but I can still vividly remember waking Liza up to tell her about the tragedy like it was yesterday. Phuket remains a beautiful place to visit…I wonder if we will ever come here again??

Taking a left turn…

Living in a small country like Singapore has its perks, especially when it comes to easy travel. We’re taking advantage of that by sneaking off to Thailand for a week to explore Phuket! We’re traveling light with only our niece’s school bags as our luggage. It’s amazing how adaptable we’ve become to minimalistic travel...!

The airport in Singapore is absolutely stunning! Unlike other airports that are just a place to come and go, this one is entirely different. It features a vast mall distinct from the airport itself, and it even boasts one of the most magnificent waterfalls known as The Rain Vortex - the largest and tallest indoor waterfall at 130 feet (or 40 meters).

The last time we were in Phuket was almost 15 years ago…I wonder how much has changed?

If you’ve been following our Instagram account, you know that I enjoy exploring a country through the lens of religion and philosophy. With Singapore’s diverse culture, we were able to visit a Hindu temple and an Islamic Mosque...

Additionally, we also had an amazing time at the Singapore Visitors Center at the Indian Heritage Centre, and we were blown away by the craziest 24-hour store @mustafacentre we’ve ever seen! If the zombies come, this is where you will find me. Unfortunately, we were having so much fun that we forgot to take any pictures, but the memories will last a lifetime…!

A major part of this trip was spending time with family. We had the opportunity to make bowls out of clay….but I missed my opportunity to play Ghost. We also picked up drums and found our rhythm during class. I’m pretty sure the teacher thought I was the best, but he didn’t have a chance to tell me…he probably didn’t want to hurt everyone’s feelings. 😜

The art of planning..

Singapore is a small island country the size of NYC where approximately 5.5 Million people live…it is one of the most dense countries in the world, but it is also considered one of the most planned countries in the world too…

This country is an engineering marvel unlike any other. After visiting the Urban Redevelopment Authority Museum, we were inspired by Singapore’s innovative approach to addressing real-world challenges such as water, waste, energy, transportation, housing, taxes/finances, and the aging population. While they haven’t found all the answers, the progress they’ve achieved is amazing and should serve as a model for others to follow.

Unfortunately, there was a recent oil spill that has leaked into the water, serving as a reminder that even advanced countries still face certain environmental challenges. While there is hope that the spill will be cleaned up, it underscores the ongoing need for global environmental progress.

Regardless, we are lucky to have awesome family and friends here to enjoy this wonderful place. Looking forward to exploring Singapore.
